The Mountain BrideThe Venice 2024 Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize winner is an intimate portrait of a family in a remote Italian Alps village during the final days of WWII. Filmed with painterly grace, this visually breathtaking film is crying out to be seen on the big screen. The lush and breathtaking beauty of the Alps provides the physical and emotional backdrop for Maura Delpero’s visionary portrait of a family. Told in four chapters, each set in a different season, this stunningly atmospheric feature takes us into the world of Vermiglio, a remote Italian mountain village. It’s 1944 and the Second World War has not really touched this place at all — until now. When Sicilian soldier Pietro hides out in town after deserting the army, he disrupts the dynamics of the family of the local teacher schoolteacher, developing a romance with the family’s eldest daughter, Lucia. Blending historically grounded realism with painterly grace (thanks to the careful eye of multi award-winning cinematographer, Mikhail Krichman), writer and director Maura Delpero draws from her own family history to craft an intimate and momentous vision of a world suspended between the patriarchal past and the stirrings of a new future. The Mountain Bride – Vermiglio is one of the most celebrated Italian films of recent years, having won six awards at Italy’s 2025 Oscars (the David Di Donatello Awards), as well as the praise of legendary film directors, including Jane Campion. Book your tickets now. It's cheap Tuesday so they'll sell out fast.https://www.perthfestival.com.au/program/season-2026/the-mountain-bride-vermiglio |
