Jacob and Rebecca each took half the group and toured their respective research areas. I was on the brain research tour and while it was very distressing thinking about what children and their families go through in these situations, it's encouraging to hear the conviction of the researchers who are working to make better and safer treatments. We were later told Jacob ran the equivalent of 30 marathons in 30 days to raise awareness and funds for research into children's brain cancer, the leading cause of disease-related death in Australian children. One of the disturbing things Jacob told us was that although brain cancer is the leading cause of disease-related death in Australian children, there is very little funding for research as the number of children affected is relatively low. Therefore, drug companies aren't interested in research as it's not a commercial option for them.
