So on Monday 13th October join us as we start our conversation with Keith to learn what we need to do to scale up the Black Cockatoo Forest. This will commence with an onsite tour and discussion with Keith at our Black Cockatoo pocket forest site at 5pm. Then at 6.30pm at the adjacent Floreat Athena clubrooms we will view a documentary about Gondwana Link called Breathing Life into Boodja. This will then be followed with a panel discussion featuring Keith, and a number of our project collaborators: Dr Grey Coupland (Murdoch University/Pocket Forests WA), Catriona Ferrie (Rotary), Steve McCabe (Rewild Perth) and Cr Alex Castle (Deputy Mayor, City of Vincent). Dr Mark Fielding is an experienced educator with 30 years experience in state and independent secondary schools as well as teaching and researching in a research intensive university in Perth (UWA). His passions and expertise include international education, global issues and trends in education, and history (Great War and maritime history). He has a number of publications in these areas and has been a keynote speaker on these and other fields, most recently at a Global Education forum at the Gold Coast, Queensland and in Madagascar. In addition to his work in tertiary education he is also providing consultancy services in international teacher education. In this presentation Mark will briefly chart the extraordinary achievements of the AIF on the Western Front from July to September 1918 when the Australia Corps, under General John Monash, played a disproportionately crucial role in the retreat of the Germany army and the advent of the Armistice on 11 November 1918 - the day we now call Remembrance day.

Allen Graham is returning to tell members about Part 2 of the Inns and Outs of Fremantle: A Social History of Fremantle and its Hotels 1829-1929. The second book covers the years 1857-1890. While the book continues to tell the history of Fremantle’s hotel, it also tells of what colonial life was like during those years. Allen entered his first book in the Williams/Lee Steere Book of the Year Award for 2024 which is run by the Royal Western Australian Historical Society and the book was recognised as the runner up in that competition. In a certificate presented to Allen by the RWAHS they wrote ‘Inns and Outs is, we believe the first in a series of books following the history of Fremantle’s hotels, and if they are anything like this book WA will be fortunate indeed.’ That is some praise to be proud of, and Allen believes my new book is worthy of that comment. |
